Gujarat is a pioneering, futuristic and entrepreneurial state of India. In particular, Gujarat's maritime sector is considered to be the most proactive and well developed sectors of India. Gujarat Maritime Board was created in 1982 under the Gujarat Maritime Board Act, 1981 to manage, control and administer the minor ports of Gujarat. GMB presently manages the 48 non major ports of the State.

Gujarat Maritime University has been established under the Gujarat Private Universities Act, 2009. The prime objective of Gujarat Maritime University is to be a global centre of excellence in maritime education, research and development, professional training.
